Step 1: Determine What You Want

Are you trying to master the Spanish language and gain complete native fluency or do you just need basic proficiency to get by for a few weeks on vacation/work? There’s lots of other great programs out there, like Pimsleur and Platiquemos (basically FSI Spanish), but those will both take you several months to get through and see any results from, although your Spanish will be better at the end of 6 months with those than after 2 weeks with anything else, so it just depends on your needs.

Step 3: Watch Those Telenovelas (Spanish-language soap operas)!

If you have satellite or cable you almost certainly have a Spanish/Latino channel that shows these ALL day long–they’re GREAT because it’s native speakers speaking everyday colloquial Spanish at a normal rate of speed, AND you can turn on English subtitles. The key here is to remember to repeat after the actors! You know what they’re saying because you’ve got the subtitles on, and what’s the basic technique used by all Spanish learning courses? They have you listen to and repeat after a native speaker, which is what you’re doing here except it’s everyday spoken Spanish at a normal rate of speed, so you’re teaching yourself to sound just like a native in the process.

Find a subject that you’re personally very interested in (hobby, sport, country, a book, religion, politics, etc.) and then find resources about that specific subject that are in Spanish–it will actually be ENJOYABLE to you to learn Spanish this way because you’re learning about something that interests you in the process. How to Learn Spanish Verbs Easily

There’s a rumor going around that Spanish verbs are difficult and confusing. You might even be afraid to try to learn them. However, there’s no need to worry because Spanish verbs can be learned with just a little attention.

One thing people don’t realize is that English verbs are, in many ways, similar to Spanish verbs. For instance, you will often hear the complaint that it’s hard to learn Spanish verbs because you have to conjugate them. Conjugating verbs just means matching up the right verb form for each “person,” like I, you, he, she, we, or they.

What people don’t seem to understand is that we conjugate English words as well. So, for instance, we say “I have,” but we say “she has.” When you learn Spanish, you will conjugate verbs in the same way.

The only difference is that you have diverse forms for more of the “persons.” When you learn Spanish verbs, you will learn a special form each for “I”, “you”, “we”, “they”, and another form for “he”, “she”, or “it.” Another thing that makes it easy to learn Spanish verbs is that these verb forms are just based on mostly standard endings. Once you know the endings, you can apply them to the infinitives.

Infinitives are the most basic forms of the verbs. All verbs in English have an infinitive form, but most people aren’t aware of it. The English infinitive starts with the word “to,” as in “to have.” Spanish infinitives are single words, like “tener,” meaning “to have” also. If you learn Spanish infinitives, you will have a good start when you learn Spanish verbs.

As you learn Spanish, you will find that some of the words are different. Just as in English, there are irregular verbs. The English verb “to be” is conjugated “I am,” “you are,” “she is,” “we are,” and “they are.” Since these forms are not the usual infinitive with an ending, they constitute an irregular verb.

When you learn Spanish, you will learn verbs that follow similar patterns. Using the same example, for the Spanish verb “ser,” the forms are “yo soy,” “tu eres,” “ella es,” “nosotros estamos,” and “ellos estan.” These are also irregular verb forms.

The final set of forms you will need to learn Spanish are the tenses. In English, the past tense for “jump” is “jumped”. This is a regular past tense. An example of a verb with an irregular past tense is “go.” Its past tense is “went.”

As you learn Spanish, you will find out how to make the endings for each tense: present, past, past perfect, and so on. You will also learn Spanish irregular endings for verbs in the different tenses. How To Learn Spanish Online Fast – 5 Steps To Getting Started

Step 1: Determine Your Goal

The first thing you should do is ask yourself: what exactly do I want to accomplish? Am I going for total native fluency (requiring years of work) or do I just want to have a decent grasp of the language so I don’t come off as completely ignorant when speaking to a native speaker? Also, what is your time frame for learning this material? Do you have years to work on it or only a few days or weeks before you go on vacation or meet your significant other’s relatives?

There’s no getting around it: you’re going to have to spend some money on some basic educational materials and this one is probably going to be the most expensive AND the most important. I’ve used Pimsleur, Rocket Spanish, Berlitz, and Rosetta Stone amongst others, and personally I liked Synergy Spanish (see my review at the end) better than any of the others, especially for someone who just needs to get to a basic level of proficiency where they can handle simple day-to-day conversations and transactions, and they only have a few days or weeks to get there: Synergy uses 68 lessons of 10 minutes each so you can complete the whole course in a few days or weeks depending on how much time you can invest, it’s only $49, and if you’re in a rush nothing will up your Spanish language skills faster.

Step 4: Find a Native Spanish Speaker Who to Talk to

It could be a friend, it could be someone you met through a site such as Friends Abroad, it doesn’t matter just so long as you have a native speaker to converse with occasionally. You don’t need to do any type of formal lesson, in fact the more casual and colloquial it is, the better.

Step 3: Dictionaries, Thesauruses, and Translators

Personally I like to use http://Wordreference.com for my online Spanish-English dictionary, I used Urban Dictionary to look up spanish slang and curse words (they’re better than anybody for this), and I use Babelfish for my translator. You might also want to grab a paper dictionary and a wonderful little book called ‘501 Spanish Verbs’ that has the most commonly used verbs and shows their conjugations, very helpful.

Step 5: Learn at Least ONE New Spanish Word Each Day–You MUST Commit!

Commit to learning at least one new Spanish word per day–this will be HUGE for adding to your vocabulary although it might not seem like it at the time. I like to use a site called Spanish-Word-A-Day who will gladly send you a new word to your RSS feed or to your iGoogle homepage–I know there’s other sites that can also email you a new one(s) each day as well. The important thing is to commit to actually doing this, that way if you don’t get any other Spanish work done that day then at least you still did SOMETHING if you’ve done this, and it really doesn’t take but a few seconds.

Bonus Step: Watch Telenovelas! (Spanish language soap operas)

One of the best things you can do to improve your Spanish is to sit down for 30-60 minutes each day and watch a Spanish language soap opera, called a telenovela, which will almost always be available if you have cable or satellite. Personally, I find the best thing to do if you have Tivo or something similar is to turn on subtitles (Spanish not English) and then after a character says something pause it EACH time and figure out what they said, then repeat it a few times to yourself until you’ve got it and could understand it if you heard it again at full speed, then unpause it and continue to do this. You might only get through 5 minutes worth of the show in 30 minutes, but you will learn a LOT of Spanish.What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? Trilingual.
